More importantly, professionals use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find water behind walls and under floors that you cannot see or feel.
DIY mitigation with a wet vac and box fans removes surface water but leaves moisture in drywall, insulation, framing, and subflooring. That trapped moisture often leads to mold growth within 24–48 hours, creating a larger and more expensive problem than the original water event.
For contaminated water (Category 2 or 3, including sewage and groundwater), DIY mitigation is a health hazard and should not be attempted. Proper PPE, containment, and antimicrobial treatment are required. For any water loss beyond a small, clean-water spill on a hard surface, professional mitigation is strongly recommended.
