Water extraction is not the same as drying. Extraction removes the visible, standing water and water trapped in carpet and padding using powerful extractors and submersible pumps. Drying then removes the remaining moisture that has absorbed into drywall, framing, subfloors, and other materials.
The more water removed by extraction, the less work the drying equipment has to do. Thorough extraction can shorten drying time by days and significantly reduce the risk of secondary damage and mold.
Extraction is typically performed immediately upon arrival, after a safety assessment identifies the water category and affected areas. It is followed by moisture mapping to locate hidden water, and then by structural drying.
